Telcos Positioned Well For Edge Computing Growth

The data demanded by IoT (Internet of Things) is relentless, and will continue to grow at a rapid pace. To handle the volume of data and avoid latency issues, companies must locate network resources close to their end-users; edge computing networks are critical. Given wireless bandwidth is often limited at the edge, telecom companies will have more influence since their cell towers are the sites where limited wireless networks meet high capacity fiber networks near substations.

Autonomous cars, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) all require fast round-trip response times; all are making huge demands on edge networks. An article published in the December/January issue of DCD Magazine provides additional insight into this topic; see Edge networks demand a whole new compromise.

Quote from the above article,

Mobile network providers have become expert at building backhaul capacity quickly enough to meet expanding demands from human users. The trouble is, the automated applications of the new edge will demand scaling at a much faster rate.
